ACID is a custom version of CentOS 5 configured to run with a single USB dongle on Allstar link. If you want to run a multi-node system or prefer a GUI setup go to the Allstarlink Portal first and configure your server there.

Pre-Installation Notes

First, burn a CD by downloading the ISO CD image dl.allstarlink.org/installcd/acid_centos.iso.

WARNING: The CD will write over the current contents of the disk. Be sure that you have saved everything which needs saving on the installation hard disk before inserting the installation CD.

You will need an assigned Allstar link node number as it is required to complete the installation process. Allstar node numbers can be requested from http://allstarlink.org. In order to complete the installation, you will need your assigned allstar node number and the password. Please make a note of these when you receive email confirmation from allstarlink.org.

To Install

  1. Connect the PC you are going to install to the your home network network making sure your home network has a DHCP server if you want the server to use a dynamic IP address (most common), or have your static IP address information ready to enter when prompted.
  2. Modify the BIOS settings on the PC to boot from CDROM first
  3. Insert the CDROM in this package into the PC's CDROM drive, and force a reboot.
  4. Press return when prompted
  5. Wait for the installer to repartition and format the hard drive and install Centos.
  6. When the installer puts up the reboot prompt, remove the CDROM and press enter.
  7. Plug in your USB FOB if you haven't already
  8. The system will now reboot and prompt for static or dynamic IP address configuration. (Most users will want dynamic)
  9. The installer will then proceed to install the rest of the software over the network.
  10. After 2 more reboots, a prompt to change the root password will be displayed.
  11. You will be prompted to change the root password for the server.
  12. You will be asked if you would like the config files to be downloaded from the portal. Enter Y if 1. you have set your account up to be a sysop, 2. have set up a new server on allstarlink.org for this specific installation. If this has not been done, enter N to proceed with configuration using locally stored defaults.
  13. If you chose download config files, you should be prompted for a server password, then presented with a list of servers to choose from. If you chose to use the locally stored defaults, follow the instructions, enter your node number, and your callsign for the identifier. The system will go down for a final reboot once this information is completely entered.

Post Installation Notes

Please note that the file /etc/ssh/sshd_config is configured to listen on port 222, and probably that should be changed to some other port number for added security.

The USB fob LED should be flashing once the system is completely booted. Now, the radio should be interfaced and the audio levels adjusted using the USB FOB setup procedures located here
